What is ecopsychology?
Ecopsychology examines how individuals interact with the natural environment, using ecological and psychological ideas and research methods.
The term “ecopsychology” was coined by Theodore Roszak in 1992 to bring together environmental and psychological issues.
The goal is to promote harmony between humans and the environment, in order to create a sustainable society and a better life.
Applied ecopsychology
Ecopsychology is not only a theoretical matter, but also a practical one.
Its purpose is to help people develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural environment through experience and knowledge.
The human desire for nature is now increasingly being taken into consideration by governments, companies, and healthcare professionals. In fact, there are several areas of application:
- Mental well-being: A lack of contact with the natural environment can lead to problems such as anxiety, depression, and stress. For example, people who live in green areas tend to have lower levels of stress and mental illness than those who live in urban environments.
- Physical well-being: The benefits of ecopsychology are not limited to mental health. Studies have also shown that experiencing the natural environment can lead to stress reduction and faster recovery in patients affected by illnesses such as cancer.
- Climate change: Ecopsychology also aims to promote social and political action to protect the environment. According to some experts, the lack of a connection with the natural environment can lead to inattention and apathy toward nature, causing a negative impact on the environment.
WildSteps and ecopsychology
Just as in ecopsychology the connection between environment and person is essential for the well-being of both, WildSteps also shares this philosophy.
Indeed, WildSteps is also interested in how to improve the relationships between communities and the natural environment. Through outdoor programs, we support people and companies in promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, protecting biodiversity, and safeguarding ecosystems.
