Mental well-being and nature: what’s the connection?

Nature plays a fundamental role in achieving individual well-being, but its effects on people are not limited to our physical state; they also extend to our mental state.

Several studies have shown this strong connection, especially after the past few years.

This has led people to rethink their daily lives, increasingly pushing them to rediscover contact with nature.

What is mental well-being?

Let’s take a step back: what do we mean when we talk about mental well-being?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as:

“a state of well-being in which every individual can realize their own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and contribute to their community.”

So it should not be underestimated, because it is a fundamental part of an individual’s overall well-being.

Our mental state is important at every stage of life, from the time we are newborns to when we become adults, and it influences the way we think, feel, and act every day.

The connection with nature

Our connection with nature can have a significant impact on mental well-being.

There are several scientific studies that have shown how being in nature is essential for improving our well-being.

In recent years, the concept of eco-psychology has also become widespread. It is an approach in which psychology and ecology meet in order to develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and of the Planet.

But what are some of the benefits we can find by being in contact with nature?

Mental well-being at work

Health and mental well-being are also extremely important in the workplace and should not be underestimated, because they can significantly affect productivity, efficiency, and employees’ overall satisfaction.

So what are the benefits at work?

  • Productivity and performance: a positive mental state is directly linked to greater productivity. Promoting activities that support mental health improves concentration and increases motivation among people within the company;
  • Morale and engagement: feeling supported and valued by the company improves mental health and makes people more likely to engage actively, creating a more positive work environment and greater collaboration;
  • Stress reduction: stress and mental well-being are closely connected. Promoting activities and offering support can help improve people’s health and create a more positive workplace climate;
  • Creativity and innovation: these are two aspects that reflect people’s mental well-being. When we feel well, we are more inclined toward creativity and a flow of innovative ideas.

How we promote it at WildSteps

At WildSteps, we strongly believe in the power of nature for mental well-being.

Through the outdoor activities and programs we offer companies, we want to create a deeper connection between people and nature, recognizing the immense benefits it can have on each individual’s mental well-being.

But that’s not all. Through our communication channels and our podcast, The Seed, we also want to guide and inspire people to rediscover a physical and mental balance by staying in contact with nature.

Our goal is to inspire people to take care of themselves and cultivate a healthier relationship with the natural environment, helping generate lasting mental well-being and a healthier, more sustainable world.
